Dr. Lisa Kubik, who performs our extractions, and Dr. Robert Holyoak, who has practiced dentistry since 1976, evaluate every option to preserve the natural tooth before recommending removal. A severely decayed tooth may still be salvageable with a root canal and crown.
A cracked tooth, depending on where the crack runs and how deep it goes, may respond well to a crown. A tooth with significant bone loss from gum disease may benefit from periodontal treatment before extraction is considered. If another dentist has told you a tooth must come out, our free second opinion can confirm whether removal is truly necessary or whether the tooth can still be saved.
Extraction is the right call when a tooth is fractured below the gumline, an abscess has destroyed too much bone, or restoring it would cost more than replacing it and produce an inferior result. What is recovery like after a tooth extraction?
Initial healing usually takes one to two weeks, and most patients return to normal activities within a day or two. Proper aftercare is what keeps healing smooth and prevents dry socket. Here is what to expect:
- Bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes after the procedure to control bleeding
- Apply ice packs to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
- Take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed
- Eat soft foods and avoid the extraction site when chewing
- Do not smoke, use straws, or spit forcefully for at least 72 hours
- Gently rinse with warm salt water starting 24 hours after extraction
Replacing extracted teeth
Except for wisdom teeth, we generally recommend replacing extracted teeth. Gaps in your smile can cause remaining teeth to shift, affect your bite, and lead to bone loss.
