What happens at your first dental exam, step by step

Walking into a new dental office for the first time? Here is a step-by-step look at what happens, from paperwork to the exam, cleaning, and treatment planning.

Starting with a new dentist can feel uncertain. You do not know the office, the doctor, or the routine. You might wonder whether you will be lectured about what you have been neglecting, or handed an overwhelming treatment plan on the way out.

That is not how it works at Copper Sky Dental. A good first visit is mostly about getting to know each other and getting a clear picture of where your teeth are right now. Here is exactly what to expect, step by step.

What do you need to do before your first visit?

Not much. When you call to schedule, our team will tell you what to bring. That usually means your insurance card if you have dental coverage, a photo ID, and any records or X-rays from your previous dentist. If you are a new patient, you can fill out paperwork online in advance or arrive a few minutes early to complete it at the office.

If you take prescription medications, bring a list or be prepared to share what you are on. Some medications affect oral health. Dry mouth is a common side effect of many prescriptions, and it helps your dentist to have the full picture.

If you have dental anxiety, let us know when you call. There are things we can do to make the visit easier, and it helps to know before you arrive rather than managing it in the chair.

What happens when you arrive and check in?

You will be greeted at the front desk. If there is any remaining paperwork, you will complete that first. We will verify your insurance information and walk you through any questions about coverage.

We keep wait times minimal. Our hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 AM to 3 PM, and appointments are scheduled with enough time that you are not competing with a packed waiting room.

What does the exam involve?

Most first visits begin with X-rays. These give your dentist a view of what is happening beneath the gumline and between teeth, areas that cannot be seen in a visual exam alone. Standard X-rays at a new-patient visit typically include bitewing X-rays showing the back teeth, along with individual images of any teeth that need a closer look.

After X-rays, Dr. Holyoak or Dr. Kubik will do a comprehensive exam. This includes:

  • Visual inspection of each tooth for decay, cracks, or existing restorations that may need attention
  • Periodontal charting, a gum health check that measures the depth of the pockets around each tooth
  • Oral cancer screening, a quick visual and tactile check of your lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat
  • Review of your bite and jaw alignment

The dentist will look at your X-rays during or after the clinical exam. You will discuss findings together: what is healthy, what needs attention, and what is worth monitoring.

Will you get a cleaning at your first visit?

Many first visits include a cleaning with one of our dental hygienists. The cleaning removes tartar buildup (calculus) that brushing and flossing cannot address, polishes the tooth surfaces, and gives your hygienist a chance to review your home care routine with you.

If there is significant gum disease present, a standard cleaning may not be the right first step. In that case, your hygienist may recommend a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing before moving to routine maintenance. They will explain what they are seeing and why, if that applies to you.

How does treatment planning work at the end of the visit?

At the end of your first visit, your dentist will walk you through any findings and discuss next steps. If treatment is recommended, you will get a clear explanation of what it is, why it is being recommended, what happens if it is not addressed, and what it will cost.

We do not pressure anyone into immediate decisions. If you need time to review a treatment plan, ask questions, or get a second opinion, that is completely reasonable. Our job is to give you good information. The decisions are yours.

If everything looks good, you will schedule your next routine cleaning and be on your way.

What will the experience at Copper Sky Dental actually feel like?

We do not judge you for how long it has been. Most adults have gaps in their dental care at some point. What matters is where things stand now and what makes sense going forward.

We do not hand you off to a treatment coordinator to present a plan on behalf of the dentist. Dr. Holyoak or Dr. Kubik will talk with you directly, answer your questions, and give you their honest read, not a scripted presentation.

We do not run a high-volume practice. You will have real time with your dentist. If you have questions or concerns, you will have a chance to raise them.

Dr. Robert Holyoak has been practicing since 1976. Dr. Lisa Kubik joined him and sees patients alongside him. Together they bring a straightforward, unhurried approach to care that patients consistently describe as different from what they experienced elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a first visit to a new dentist take?
Most new-patient visits at Copper Sky Dental take 60 to 90 minutes. That time covers X-rays, a comprehensive exam, and a cleaning if it is scheduled for the same visit. If significant treatment planning is needed, add a bit more time for that conversation.
What should I bring to my first dental visit?
Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, and any dental records or X-rays from your previous dentist if you have them. A list of your current medications is also helpful. If you have been experiencing tooth pain or specific concerns, be ready to describe them so your dentist can prioritize.
Do I need dental X-rays at my first visit to a new practice?
Generally yes. X-rays show what is happening between and below the teeth, areas that cannot be seen visually. If you have recent X-rays from another dentist, bring them and we may be able to use them instead of retaking everything.
Do you accept new patients who do not have dental insurance?
Yes. If you do not have insurance, we will discuss costs upfront and can talk through payment options. We want the financial side to be clear before any treatment begins.
