First appointments can feel uncertain, especially if it's been a while since your last dental visit. You don't know the office, the dentist, or the routine. You might be wondering if they'll lecture you about what you've been neglecting, or whether you're going to leave with a long and expensive treatment plan.

Here's the reality: a good first visit is mostly about getting to know each other and getting a clear picture of where your teeth are right now. That's it. This is what to expect when you come to Copper Sky Dental for the first time.

Before You Arrive

When you call to schedule, our team will let you know what to bring. That usually means your insurance card if you have dental coverage, a photo ID, and any records or X-rays from your previous dentist if you have them. If you're a new patient, you can fill out paperwork online in advance or arrive a few minutes early to complete it at the office.

If you take prescription medications, bring a list or be prepared to share what you're on. Some medications affect oral health dry mouth is a common side effect of many prescriptions and it helps your dentist to have the full picture.

If you have dental anxiety, let us know when you call. There are things we can do to make the visit easier, and it helps if we're aware before you arrive rather than managing it in the chair.

What Happens at Check-In

You'll be greeted at the front desk, and if there's any remaining paperwork, you'll complete that first. We'll verify your insurance information and walk you through any questions about coverage.

We try to keep wait times minimal. Our hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 AM to 3 PM, and appointments are scheduled with enough time that you're not competing with a waiting room full of patients.

The Exam

Most first appointments begin with X-rays. These give your dentist a view of what's happening beneath the gumline and between teeth areas that can't be seen with a visual exam alone. Standard X-rays at a new patient visit typically include bitewing X-rays (showing the back teeth) and possibly a panoramic X-ray that captures your full jaw in one image.

After X-rays, Dr. Holyoak or Dr. Kubik will do a comprehensive exam. This includes:

  • Visual inspection of each tooth for decay, cracks, or existing restorations that may need attention
  • Periodontal charting a gum health check that measures the depth of the pockets around each tooth
  • Oral cancer screening a quick visual and tactile check of your lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat
  • Review of your bite and jaw alignment

The dentist will look at your X-rays during or after the clinical exam. You'll discuss findings together what's healthy, what needs attention, and what's worth monitoring.

Cleaning (If Scheduled)

Many first appointments include a cleaning with one of our dental hygienists. The cleaning removes tartar buildup (calculus) that brushing and flossing can't address, polishes the tooth surfaces, and gives your hygienist a chance to review your home care routine with you.

If there's significant gum disease present, a standard cleaning may not be the right first step. In that case, your hygienist may recommend a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing before a routine maintenance cleaning. They'll explain what they're seeing and why if that applies to you.

Treatment Planning

At the end of your first visit, your dentist will walk you through any findings and discuss next steps. If treatment is recommended, you'll get a clear explanation of what it is, why it's being recommended, what happens if it's not addressed, and what it will cost.

We don't pressure anyone into immediate decisions. If you need time to review a treatment plan, ask questions, or get a second opinion, that's completely reasonable. Our job is to give you good information the decisions are yours.

If everything looks good, you'll schedule your next routine cleaning and be on your way.

What We Don't Do

We don't judge you for how long it's been. Most adults have gaps in their dental care at some point. What matters is where things stand now and what makes sense going forward.

We don't hand you off to a treatment coordinator to present a plan on behalf of the dentist. Dr. Holyoak or Dr. Kubik will talk with you directly, answer your questions, and give you their honest read not a scripted presentation.

We don't run a high-volume, revolving-door practice. You'll have time with your dentist. If you have questions or concerns, you'll have a chance to ask them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a first dental appointment take?

Most new patient appointments at Copper Sky Dental take 60 to 90 minutes. This includes X-rays, a comprehensive exam, and a cleaning if it's scheduled for the same visit. If significant treatment planning is needed, add a bit more time for that conversation.

What should I bring to my first dental appointment?

Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, and any dental records or X-rays from your previous dentist if you have them. A list of your current medications is also helpful. If you've been experiencing any tooth pain or specific concerns, be ready to describe those so your dentist can prioritize.

Do I need dental X-rays at my first visit?

Generally yes. X-rays are essential for a thorough first exam they show what's happening between and below the teeth that can't be seen visually. If you have recent X-rays from another dentist, bring those and we may be able to use them instead of retaking everything.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?

That's more common than you'd think. We won't lecture you about it. We'll do a comprehensive exam, tell you clearly what we find, and discuss options in straightforward terms. The goal is to get you back on track not to make you feel bad about a gap in care.

Do you accept new patients without insurance?

Yes. If you don't have insurance, we'll discuss costs upfront and can talk through payment options. We want to make sure the financial side is clear before any treatment begins.
